Sword Holes
At the 3/27/03 club meeting Winnie Bade brought in a new growth leaf with holes. It came from her favorite Sword plant having otherwise healthy looking older leaves. She was hoping we could figure out why her new leaves were getting holes. No snails in the tank, so what's going on? One speculation suggested swords put out great roots and maybe the plant wasn't getting enough nutrients to support well formed new leaf shoots.

Cryptocoryne Rot
Cryptocoryne petchii, plus C. wendtii and C. crispatula v. "Balansae Green", Vallisneria, Cabomba and a mass of Duckweed, Salvinia, Frog Bit and Wolffiella had taken over the 20H, in Science House. Amazing how the Crypts burgeoned to dominate the space. Clearing away the floaters and doing a big harvest below, sure made a difference. With the remaining plants appearing so robust, I figured I'd wait a week before adding fertilizer.

Lakes Alive

Jerry Weiland and I started monitoring Lake Kegonsa and Lake Mendota. Each week he collects samples and I test water parameters. The lakes are known to go through seasonal transformations including the bothersome algae blooms. We aim to correlate data, with plant and algae performance. What analogies can we draw between "big" aquatic ecosystems and small ones of the home aquarium?
